Membership Initiatives
Thursday, April 30, 2009 (20:15:14)
My fellow members,

As you will see in the coming Executive BOD minutes, we passed two important motions that I wanted to present to you with some explanation.

First, in an attempt to increase both individual and club memberships, the EBOD elected to grant a free membership to members of new clubs. When a new club membership application is submitted to the NAHRA office and is accompanied by individual membership applications of club members, NAHRA will offer a free membership to those individuals for the remainder of the calendar year. This shall also apply to past NAHRA affiliated clubs and their members who wish to reaffiliate. The protocol is the same, membership applications for individuals must be received with the club application and fee.

Secondly, NAHRA memberships will now be based upon the calendar year (January 1 to December 31). This will align all memberships and seriously cut down on the work involved at the NAHRA office to track memberships. This will also alleviate some of the headaches Field Test Committees face during the planning and application process ensuring committee members and judges have up to date dues . Consequently, the NAHRA office will be able to process applications quicker and more efficiently.

For those whose membership renewals are past January 1, the NAHRA office will accept partial dues payment for the remainder of the year. Please check with the office regarding partial payments. This will be a one time inconvenience but it will reduce administrative problems in the long run. All new memberships from this point forward will be handled in the same manner. If you have any questions, please call or email the NAHRA office.

I hope these initiatives by the EBOD will serve to make NAHRA affiliation more appealing and serve to make the administration of our program more efficient.

Changing gears a little, I thought I would mention an issue that has grabbed my attention in the past week. This involves the combining of stakes at our licensed events. As you know, the NAHRA rules now allow only two stakes to be combined at a licensed event unless a compelling reason is provided and is subsequently authorized by a BOD member. Several clubs have recently requested permission to combine three stakes at their events. While I realize economics and help are the driving forces at work here, I must tell you that the BOD will hold fast to the two stake limit unless a severe hardship or other compelling reason is presented.

The BOD enacted this limit to protect the quality of our testing events and also not to burden judging pairs with the responsibility of creating adequate and complete testing of our dogs at the various categories. In cases where entries are very low and the need to cut down on judging expenses are necessary, we have provided the following alternative. A judging pair may judge three categories if only two stakes are combined and completed before starting the third stake. For instance, if Started and Hunter are combined, then an Intermediate would not start until the completion of the former. Using the previous example, it would be prudent that clubs inform the participants in the Intermediate stake in advance that a later start time will be required so that they are not inconvenienced by a long wait if test premiums indicate an early start.

In a perfect world (where we hope to be in a year or two), all events will be stand alone and have its own set of judges. We are working toward this but for the time being, the BOD will continue to allow two combined stakes. Field Test Committees are reminded not to push the envelope and have dissatisfied participants due to trying to do things on the cheap and hosting a less than quality event. Planning of your event and number of stakes held based upon local or regional numbers of participants is the best practice. Work with your Regional Director and neighboring clubs to present the best schedule and types and numbers of stakes offered.

Pick em up clean!

NAHRA is looking for a few good men…and women!

As the 2009 Board of Directors, we know and have heard many of you who want to help the NAHRA organization and we appreciate it. For many years, the NAHRA organization did not have a formal way to get members involved without holding an officer or regional director position. Well, we plan on changing that; many of you have a lot of innovate ideas to better the organization and we want your help.

Calling all NAHRA members – Here’s your chance to get involved, come up with, and implement some great ideas…

Please click on the "Job Postings for the Website" link under the NAHRA Info block for more information.
